Q: Where should I store my emergency food?
When planning for the future, it pays to think ahead when storing your emergency food. To ensure our freeze-dried and dehydrated products remain at peak quality, store them in cool and dry locations to protect from temperature change, moisture buildup, oxygen exposure or UV light.
Q: How long do the meals last in storage?
Freeze-dried and dehydrated food can offer a timeless guarantee – with the correct storage conditions, it'll last up to 25 years or more. For longer lasting meals, store them in an area such as your basement where temperatures remain between 50-55 degrees for optimal shelf life.
Q: Can I store my emergency food or kit in my car?
Storing your emergency food or kit in the car is doable, but it's important to be mindful of the potentially scorching temperatures that can rack up. Heat and humidity have a negative effect on shelf life - so when you're not storing them in optimal conditions then make sure to inspect and replace annually for maximum longevity.
Q: How much food do I need for me and my family?
We recommend (as well as FEMA) that each member of your family have their own 72-hour emergency kit (3 days) at the bare minimum.
So if you have a family of four, you will need 4: Hanson 72-Hour Emergency Kits.
Once you have that, we recommend storing enough food and water for a minimum of 1 week with an end goal of 3 months or more. 72 hours is a great start, but emergency services can take days to weeks to respond and stabilize. Stock your pantry little by little at your own pace and budget with our #10 meal cans & buckets.
Examples: 1 week: If you have a family of four, and everyone will eat 3 meals daily, you will need 84 meals/servings.
3 months: If you have a family of four, and everyone will eat 3 meals daily, you will need 1092 meals/servings.
Q: I’ve never needed to be prepared for a big emergency or natural disaster, so why should I start now?
With every passing moment, we are all edging closer to the next potential disaster. Unfortunately, procrastination and ignorance cloud this truth and renders us ill-prepared for what may await us in the future. Don't be lulled into a false sense of security—because the real emergency is not being prepared.
